Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital (MTD) changes how many sole traders and landlords report their income. If it applies to you, you’ll need to keep digital records, use compatible software and send HMRC a summary of your income and expenses every quarter, as well as your tax return by 31 January.
Does it apply to you?
- From 6 April 2026qualifying income over £50,000
- From 6 April 2027qualifying income over £30,000
- From 6 April 2028qualifying income over £20,000
Qualifying income is your total income from self-employment and property before expenses. HMRC uses the figures from your earlier tax returns to decide when you need to start.
Who it’s for
- Self-employed people with straightforward business income
- Freelancers and consultants
- Sole traders who want their tax return handled properly
What your price depends on
- Turnover
- Number of transactions
- Whether you need bookkeeping or VAT returns

All prices are total prices — no VAT to add.

Common questions
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
Your online return and any balancing payment are generally due by 31 January after the end of the tax year (5 April). If payments on account apply to you, the first is due by 31 January and the second by 31 July. Please send us your complete records by 31 October so we have time to prepare your return.
What do I need to send you for my tax return?
Your business income and expenses, business bank statements, and details of any other income such as employment, savings interest or dividends. We send you a checklist each year.
Does Making Tax Digital apply to me?
It depends on your qualifying income (income from self-employment and property, before expenses) in a specific earlier tax year, and on your circumstances. The thresholds are over £50,000 from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Some people are exempt or can apply for an exemption. We’ll check your position against HMRC’s rules for you.
Are MTD quarterly updates included?
They’re usually extra to the Sole Trader Digital plan. Whether you need them, and the scope and price, are confirmed in your proposal.
Is rental or foreign income included?
Not automatically. Property and foreign income are reviewed individually, and we’ll tell you before you sign whether they change your fee.
Should I become a limited company?
It depends on your profits and plans. A Business Structure Review looks at this in detail. See consultation options.
